"The Outsiders" by S.E Hinton is a novel about misunderstood teenagers (greasers) and there ongoing feud with the rich upper class "Socs". The story follows Ponyboy a bright kid and his friend group. He lives with his 2 older brothers Sodapop and Darry. Soda is the middle child, he's always kind to Pony and always hears his side of the story. Darry is the oldest he works 2 jobs to pay for bills after their parents died. The rest of there "gang" consists of Johnny who comes from an abusive home, where his parents are always beating him, Dally who came from New York and was in jail when he was 10 he gets himself in trouble for fun and the only thing he cares about in the world is Johnny. then theirs Steeve who is Sodapop’s best friend, and finally …show more content…
When they go back to the church they to get their stuff they find out the church is on fire. A school group is there, on some kind of field trip, and little kids are trapped inside. Without thinking, Pony and Johnny race inside and rescue the kids. As they are handing the kids outside to Dally, the burning roof collapses. Pony barely escapes, but a piece of timber falls on Johnny, burning him badly and breaking his back. The boys, now viewed as heroes, are taken in an ambulance back to town, where Pony's brothers are waiting. In the morning all of the newspapers are calling Ponyboy and Johnny heroes. They also say that, because of Bob’s death, Johnny will be charged with manslaughter. They also say that Pony has to go to court for them to decide if Pony should be sent to a boys home or stay with his brothers. Pony is furious and scared about that he and his brother have always stuck together. Pony gets a coke and runs into Randy (a soc) Randy tells him Randy tells Ponyboy that he is sick of all the fighting and does not plan to go to the rumble that night.
