Why do young people feel the need to belong to a certain group, configure themselves to fit the expectations of society, and follow their group like a lamb to a slaughter? These questions can take form while reading the Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. This story centers around the conflict of two gangs, the Greasers, and the Soc’s. The Greasers are lower class troublemakers who put a lot of greases in their hair, and like to jump people. The Soc’s are a high class society of rich spoiled teenagers who enjoy picking on Greasers. Ponyboy Curtis, the narrator and main character of the story is a Greaser, and lives with his two older brothers Sodapop and Darry.
