The Outsiders Book Report Essay

The Outsiders is a book I enjoyed from the first page, with a very strong beginning. The six components of this beginning follow. The setting is the most important part of any story. In The Outsiders the main characters are Ponyboy, Darry, Soda, Johnny, Dally, Two-bit, and Steve. In The Outsiders there are two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are from the west, and the Greasers are from the east. Financially, the Socs have the upper hand, and the Greasers have more trouble with money. Ponyboy Curtis is the youngest member of the Greasers at fourteen. Ponyboy likes to read and does fairly well in school, this ability of his sets him apart from the rest of the members in his gang. Johnny Cade is a sixteen year old Greaser with black hair and large, scary eyes, and a smaller body. Johnny comes from a very abusive and troubling family with his father beating him a lot of time. Johnny considers the Greasers his true family, and the older boys like Dally are very protective of him. Dallas Winston is the toughest member of the greasers. Dally used to be in gangs in New York City. He has icy blue eyes, and does not put gel in his blonde hair. Dally is the only Greaser with a criminal record. Keith Mathews, also known as Two-Bit, is the oldest member of the Greasers. He has a tall build and is very strong. He regularly shoplifts and his most prized possesion is is black- handled swithblade. Steve Randle is a sixteen-year-old Greaser who works with Soda at the Gas station. He is tall and lean and is one of Soda’s best friends since grade school. He is very tough and is not afraid to fight. The main characters of any story are the most important detail. They shape how one sees the story and can help how someone understand a characters
