ARGUMENT ESSAY ROUGH DRAFT
Do you and your family stick together through everything? I believe that families who stick together can survive any challenge that the world presents. The book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton is a good example of a family that faces many obstacles but sticks together through good times and bad times.
One example in the book that demonstrates this is when Pony boy says to Darry, “What’s the sweat about my schoolwork?” Darry responds by telling Ponyboy that they could send him to college because he is a smart kid and he could get into college. This is true when Soda says “Ponyboy, I am telling you the truth. I dropped out because I am dumb. I really did try in school, but you saw my grades.” I think that this is another example of how much the brothers believe in Ponyboy and want the very best for him. I think this is hard for Ponyboy to understand because he is younger than his two older brothers. Ponyboy feels that his brothers are being too hard on him but the evidence here shows that Soda does love Ponyboy even though he doesn’t always approve of Ponyboy’s choices. Soda Pop respects his younger brother and admires that fact that Pony is smart. Soda Pop is good looking and fun but he sees in Ponyboy something special that he knows he does not have. I think that Soda and Darry, especially, show their love for Ponyboy by pushing him to make good decisions that they know will benefit him in the long run. Ponyboy doesn’t understand this and feels that his brothers boss him around because he isn’t able to put himself in their shoes and realize that they only want what is best for him. Ponyboy feels unloved and gets upset and runs way when he feels he is being picked on. What Soda and Darry are saying to Ponyboy is that they love him so much and want him to benefit from some of the opportunities that they missed out on. Although they have a lot of challenges, they always seem to come together and realize that they are there for each other. Even though their strength as a family is tested, the love that Darry, Soda and Pony have for each other never dies. You can look at this story in many ways. The other argument is that the Curtis family is not strong because some of the choices that they make are not the best. When I read “The Outsiders” I could find very little information to support this counterclaim. Love in their family is very strong. The way the Curtis brothers roughhouse and treat each other may not be the way that every family behaves. But all families are different and have very different ways of showing how much they care for each other. Sometimes the brothers get upset, annoyed and very angry with each other but there is no evidence that they hate each other. Even when Darry is at his angriest point and hits his brother, he quickly regrets it and feels badly. The strong bond and connection that they have is never broken. Understanding the strength and love of families is a very important subject.
