The Outsider

I was never much of a reader during middle school. It wasn’t until high school, where we were introduced to numerous genres of different novels, when I started to appreciate books. However, one of my all-time favorite books was one I read in high school, and I have had a deep appreciation for it ever since - The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This book, and numerous others, has shown me In my freshman year of high school, we were assigned to bring in a book to read during English during our free time, and since I was not much of a reader then, I immediately went to my parents for a suggestion. In that instance, my mom handed me an old, worn-out paperback copy of The Outsiders. I was told that it's “a great coming-of-age” book, and that I could probably relate to one or more of the characters. Being a teenager, I never took my mom’s word for what it was or meant to be. The next school day, as I started reading it, I got more and more into the book, and I found someone I could relate to - Ponyboy. I liked the fact that he was around the same age as me, at that point in time, and the fact that he liked to run, just as I did. In our society, people are known to judge others based on their looks and their appearances, but never care to look at their personality. Looking for Alaska by John Green, has also shown me not to judge people based on their appearances, as both of the main characters in these novels are members of gangs, who separate themselves based on wealth. Both novels show that even though people with wealth put up a front to show their happiness, they face the same struggles as those who aren’t as wealthy. These books, and numerous others, has shown me to appreciate all that I have, as others may not be as
