In Jonathan Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Oskar Schell is a gifted nine year old in search of a meaning for his life outside of his central tragedy--the passing of his father in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. More than anything, he cannot escape from his own mind and his obsession with his father: “It doesn't make me feel good when you say that something I do reminds you of Dad” (Foer). For my film analysis, I chose to analyze the movie “The Outsiders” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. In this movie, a gang of outcasts from the north side of town called the Greasers are always fighting against a rival group called the Socials, who are the rich jocks from the south side of town. The story follows two young Greasers, Johnny and Ponyboy, who aren’t like the others. These two see that fighting is pointless, but it’s just the way they live their life. The two boys get into a fight with some Socials and end up killing one.…

In Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the woods, five college students arrive at a cabin to vacation for the weekend, unaware of the horrific events that lie ahead. Each character portrayed a standard character type in the beginning of the film, but as the film continues the audience learns more about each character and their true identity. Curt “The Athlete”, Jules “The Whore”, Marty “The Fool”, Dana “The Virgin” and Holden “The Scholar” all play the leading roles. The film is set-up as the stereotypical “slasher film.” The horrific event is induced by the past and conflict is between a fictional antagonist and a group of teenagers, which includes two girls, one is a virgin and her best friend is a whore.…

Malcolm Gladwell's novel The Outliers has provoked many different feelings including liberation, curiosity, and even helplessness. However, after reading this novel, the feeling of inspiration trumps all others. Throughout Gladwell’s book, he used a variety of different people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and education levels to show how they became or did not become successful. In the end, if a person was born at the right time, had the correct background, were in a specific location, and were diligent and hardworking, then according to Gladwell, they would ultimately succeed.…

Based on chapters 6 and 7 of Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell uses the term "cultural legacy" to coin a type of tradition that affects a person response to certain situations that may be morally questioning or difficult. He contributes some of the success that people achieve to cultural legacy because sometimes it is what pushes people to work and do better in certain fields. This somewhat goes along with the classical definition of success, being that hard work and determination will get you on track to succeed. However, it still leaves room for cultural legacies to be a form of opportunity that some people just aren't able to obtain. Malcom Gladwell uses the example of the difference in thought processes between Western and Asian thinkers.…

In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the Creature is an outcast of society, which is a person who is not accepted by society’s standards because people feel as if they “need” to be “normal”. Today’s outcasts of society are considered prisoners, a PTSD strickened veteran, or sociopaths. The outcasts of society are the most interesting people in the world because they are not what people in society call “normal”. These special people are the outcome of societal action directed towards those individuals. Victor Frankenstein would be one of the outcasts of society in the novel because after he creates the monster or creature he starts becoming more distant from his closest friends and family.…
