The Other Wes Moore And Man's Environment Analysis

Environment Means Everything Former Olympic Sprinter, Wilma Rudolph, once said “It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to accomplish. It’s all a matter of discipline. I was determined to discover what life held for me beyond the inner-city streets.” This quote by Rudolph is a prime example of how hard the inner-city life can be to overcome. In “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates,” it portrays the struggle of the inner-city life between the two main characters as one has the discipline to escape the inner-city life, while the other is trapped in it forever. Living in the inner-city can be really difficult with the horrible surroundings such as drugs and violence that happen every day in the inner-city. However, as Wilma Rudolph claims, anyone can escape the brutal inner-city life, they just need the discipline and will to do so. The author Wes Moore lived in a bad neighborhood, but was able to overcome it with the help of his family. After being sent to military school, he got his life together which led to him becoming a very prestigious Rhodes Scholar. The other Wes Moore on the other hand was not so fortunate. With the influence of his brother Tony selling drugs, he lived a life of crime and violence. This led to him assisting Tony in killing a police officer which led him to a life sentence in prison. Both Wes Moores were capable of changing their lives, but only one, the author, actually was willing to make a change. Ergo, this shows that environment is a crucial factor in deciding whether a person is good or evil, but they have the option, if they are up to the challenge, to make a change and escape their environment to better their
