French fashion designer, Coco Chanel once said, “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself, aloud.” Many people are afraid of standing up for what they believe in and it will destroy you. When you sit back quietly it won’t help you in any way. Expressing your feelings out loud will help you understand more things and become a stronger person. The author uses the character Honor’s words and actions to prove the theme: standing up for what you believe in will make you stronger, to the reader. In the book The Other Side of the Island, Honor is a strong, beautiful and courageous girl that believes in many things. She believes that nature changes over time and that everyone should stand up for what they believe in. For example, in …show more content…
Honor answered, “Every year they turn red, brown, and yellow.” Her teacher disagreed with her and was not happy with her answer, but Honor stood up to the teacher and said that they did. Also, one day at recess Honor went to talk to the orderlies, which they were not supposed to, and she got in trouble. She told the teacher that she wanted to get to know the other people and that she believed everyone should be included. Mrs. Whyte then took her inside and punished her for talking to the orderlies. Cleary, the theme of the book The Other Side of the Island, is to stand up for what you believe in because it will make you a stronger person. The theme, standing up for what you believe in is relevant to today’s teenagers. In my personal situation, I believe that we should stand up for what we believe in, even in difficult situations. It will make us stronger in a situation that we might be down in. For example, I read an article one time about a man going to jail for believing in equal rights. He stood up for what he believed and sacrificed his life for those particular things. Furthermore, I also experienced a time when two of my friends got into an argument on religion.
