Tate says, “ That you were funny. Different, in a good way. Unique”, “Smart, which I knew from being in class with you. And…” He looks me up and down. “Absolutely stunning” (76). Tate is telling Jenny what he thinks about her and telling her how beautiful she is. Additionally, Alexa says, “Because you have this incredible life here.”... “Cool sisters who look up to you.” (200). This quote means that Alexa admires the way that Jenny has siblings that look up to as a role model. And the way her life is. Alexa wishes that she has siblings like Jenny’s because they are very fun to be around. Lastly, Alexa says, “Sure, you tell me about art history and you let me see your life, but you don’t explain what’s really inside. Are you afraid of the fallout that you can’t even risk saying anything? You never say what you’re really thinking until now” (197). What Alexa means by this quote is that Jenny holds in a lot things that’s on her mind and keeps them to herself she bottle up things. And when she finally says these things people never knew that she felt that way because she never said

After reading chapters one through five of On My Own Two Feet by Manisha Thakor and Sharon Kedar I learned an overall basic run down of finances and the importance of managing money. Since they mentioned several topics such as retirement, credit cards, saving accounts and many more. Additionally, in the readings, they mention a story between Tabitha and Tonya, two women with similar incomes but very different saving plans. In the book it states that Tabitha saved $5,000 a year for retirement but Tonya saved $10,000 a year for retirement. However, in the end Tabitha ended up saving more than Tonya for retirement, even though they retired the same time as well.…

As one of seven billion, people have an intrinsic want for distinction. Individuals want to stand out. We are intelligent beings who have the ability to change their identity, today this notion is becoming increasingly easier with technology and changes in social dynamics. We’re allowed to remake ourselves in whatever way we see fit, in the 90’s TV show “My So Called Life”, the main character, Angela, enters the complicated process of doing just that. In the show’s pilot it’s obvious that Angela, almost like a modern Holden Caulfield, is seriously questioning social norms.…

To his only son and every person of color, Ta-Nehisi Coates pens an open letter within the pages of Between the World and Me. Reliving a year full of tragedy found in 2015 and remembering a lifetime of pain, Coates offers to his readers through vivid storytelling, an almost entirely pessimistic perspective of life in a black body. The strength of black bodies is often circumvented by the frailty projected onto them by those with “the need to be white.” In the gaps of Coates’s pessimism is an abounding hope he cherishes for his son and others. This hope is not unlike the hope a parent has for their child to live a life better than they did but is better characterized and akin to the euphoric hope of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.…

The two book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehsi Coates and How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America by Kiese Laymon present a similar issues of racial discrimination faced by the black community on a daily bases. I found these books similar in the sense that they are discussing the same issues to some degree but have a different perspective and attitude in presenting them. For example in Coates book he discussed the history, present and future of the black community, whereas Laymon is laying out his experiences that he’s faced rather than relying on history to get his point across. Both books are written as letters to someone the authors care about and hold dear to them. Coates writes this book as a letter for his son, he stated.…

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ epistolary Between the World and Me has become a literary symbol for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Structurally, Between the World and Me is a direct descendant of The Fire Next Time; both texts were written as letters to male heirs and released at pivotal points in their respective Black social movements. Drawing on the literary legacies of the Wright school of naturalism and the Black Arts Movement, Coates’ work occupies a space between the two. However, Between the World and Me promotes a slightly more optimistic outlook than Wright’s school of naturalism, but also offers a more honest view of African American life than Black Arts Movement writers. Additionally, Coates’ work goes beyond simply straddling the ideologies…
