Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones become thin and weak. It occurs when the bone loses calcium and other important nutrients it needs. To see if one has osteoporosis they have to do a bone density test, which measures the strength of an individual’s bone and it determines the risk of having a fracture. If there is any osteoporosis present in the body, the bone density test will be able to indicate where it is. The National Osteoporosis Foundation says that around nine million people in the world have osteoporosis and there is a 48 million risk of others developing it. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than males between ages 50 to 65. Women have smaller, thin bones and they lose bone mass faster after menopause when they

Osteopenia and osteoporosis are two related conditions. As saying this the difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis is that in osteopenia the bone loss is not as severe as the osteoporosis disease. This means that someone with osteopenia is more likely to fracture their bone than someone with a normal bone density, but is less likely to fracture a bone than someone with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is not expected to affect men as much as women due to their larger skeleton and the decreased load per volume on their bones (Seriolo et al., 2013). However, the decline in gonadal function in aging men contributes to reduced amounts of free testosterone, resulting in a lowered production of bone mass and increased risk of osteoporosis (Kastelan, Giljevic, Kraljevic, & Korsic, 2006). The aging man will also experience decreased osteoblast function thus contributing to osteoporosis,…

The absolute effect of vitamin D is to assist the intestinal absorption of calcium by interposing active calcium transport across the Intestinal mucosa. One of the functions of vitamin D is to facilitate the absorption of calcium which leads to healthy bones. In this manner, vitamin D interacts by two mechanisms which are genomic and non-genomic.…
