We have been taught at a young age how to feel towards our experiences. Seems like everyone is always asking one another, "Did you like that?", or "How was your day?". Was it good or bad? On the surface, it’s common for human beings to categorize their everyday experiences. However, rather than choosing one side over the other, people must learn the importance of balancing both positive and negative thinking as an important aspect of their life. This is especially important to those who have been through tragically emotional events. Researchers from the University of Miami suggest, “repetitive negative thinking is typically characterized by perseverative and uncontrolled thoughts about negative aspects of past and future events, one’s current situation, or one’s emotional state and psychological symptoms” (181-2). Focusing all your energy on negative thoughts can have serious health issues, so it is essential to keep a healthy balance between positive and negative thoughts. One that is overly negative can have serious issues later on. For example, depression is a very serious illness that has affected many people all around the world. Studies have shown if someone were to constantly think negative all the time that can lead to serious issues such as depression. In Counselling Directory, Alistair Bond says, "Firstly, as any depressed person will tell you, just like doing the Hoovering, "Positive Thinking" is so much easier to do when you are not suffering with depression.
