Years after the famine a boy named Willard worked on his family’s farm. He would harvest potatoes and bring them to a big shed at the front of the field. From there they would be put into bags and sold at market in the next town over.
Willard never really understood the packing process but he did know that the smallest potatoes would be sent to the kitchen to be cooked.
While doing his daily picking Willard would often wonder what it would be like if his parents survived the famine years. Would they have moved to America like many others, would they spend time together like his cousins did with their parents. …show more content…
He longed to have his parents back but what he longed for the most was to run away and start a new life, wherever that may have been. Often while dreaming about the way things had been, his cousins would tease him and push him around. Willard hated the way he was treated but never spoke out about it. Although he barely had time to make friends and go to school he did know how to speak English and had a few friends from previous years.
After a blistering day in the sun Willard was pushing his last barrel of potatoes to the shed when Gram and Gentry came up behind Willard and threw him to the ground and started kicking him till he bled. WIllard wanted to get up and fight back but he knew if he did he would get the blame for the fight. That night Willard made up his mind to leave the family farm. He packed a small sack with food, water, and a picture of his parents and left when everyone was asleep. Willard knew that traveling south along the river a mile away from the farm would take him to Cork
