There are many different ways to refer to the holiday that occurs on October 31st of every year. Some say the day is “Halloween”, others may call it “All Hallows Eve”, or “The Devil’s Holiday”. No matter which term is used, October 31st is a day that many have come to enjoy. Halloween, as it is most commonly known, has been celebrated for ages. [3] It is a holiday that many are familiar with, but most do not understand completely. The day is full of history and by celebrating it, we are able to take part in a tradition that has lasted many years. The holiday has changed considerably since its inception, but the history behind Halloween remains the same.
[4] Halloween originated during the Paganistic times; therefore, the holiday dates back thousands of years. It began in Britain and Ireland, and according to the Christian Broadcasting Network the holiday was celebrated as part of the “Celtic Festival of Samhain” (Ankerburg, Weldon, & Burroughs, 2016). The holiday of Halloween is one of them. The costumes have transitioned from creepy masks, to homemade getups, and now to extremely elaborate and provocative outfits; Neal Foreman speaks of how “males as well as females, seem to think that it is carte blanche to dress as slutty as they can when they would never even dream of doing so at any other time” (Feldman, 2007). Along with costumes becoming more indecent, the crime rate of the holiday has skyrocketed. [5] Teenagers are being allowed to go off on their own, and with less parental oversight; for example, they have taken to vandalism of homes and public property. With drugs being more prevalent in today’s society, parents are also having to check their children's candy to make sure the packaging has not been tampered
