Tales of things that go bump in the dark have excited people for as long they have existed. Tales differ from region to region. Scotland is known for some of the most unique mythology and stories on the planet. From skin loosing selkies to magnificent warriors, Scotland is home to many crazy and unique pieces of folklore. The main pieces of folklore that stick out are: The many creatures that inhabit Scotland , the different creation stories, the ulster cycle , and fairies.
Mysterious creatures are native to all places ,but Scotland has some of the most unique and strange beings. The Selkies of Hebrides are said to be fairies that live in the ocean as seals but shed their skin on land and become humans.

The Selkie is a fairy that lives it life at sea as a seal and when it comes on land it sheds its skin and becomes a human. They originated on the Orkney and Shetland Islands. A story says that a fisherman one day found a beautiful female selkie on the beach . He stole her skin and forced her to marry him and bear his children. Many years later she found her skin and ran away.
The Kelpie or the water horse is dangerous creature known to haunt Scotland's moors and lochs. they appear as a lost white or gray pony to entice victims. They have a permanent dripping mane. They get victims to get on their back and then plunge into the depths drowning them. Kelpies are spoken of all over Scotland's islands.
Very few names inspire fear as directly as Bean-Nighe. The name "Bean-Nighe" means washer woman. This creature is seen as an omen of death and disaster. They take the guise of a hag washing blood soaked clothes. If someone were to see this creature that would mean the person or someone they knew were destined to die soon. He is the main hero of the Ulster cycle. Unlike other Scottish stories , the ulster cycle focuses on strength and brute force to solve problems. The Tain is the tale of the Ulster cycle. It is the story of the four provinces combining , under the Queen Mebh , to carry off the great bull of Ulstermen. The central figure of the tale is Cuchalainn. He is a young and fearsome warrior , whose primary role is to protect his people. The Tale is told in sixteen stories. The stories begin with the chatting of a conversation between the queen Mebh and her king. This conversation leads to the king raising an army to steal the Bull of Ulster land. The land where the bull is from is called Ulaid. An interesting piece of information is that at the time cattle was the main indicator of wealth .
The tale is full of insane acts of violence . The story has a reoccurring situations in which the characters lose humanity and compassion due to being driven by honor and glory. The stories begin with a rich landlord forces his pregnant wife to race a chariot. She is a supernatural being named Macha. As a result of the race she dies giving birth . With her dying breath she curses all warriors of Ulster to suffer a woman's birth pains during their greatest time of need . This curse comes the haunt the
