I truly admire the way that FGCU develops as needed and only what is needed. They respect the environment that surrounds us and work on not disturbing the ecosystems when they build things. Plan B has an entire chapter about designing cities for people, not cars. If we focused on making the cities for the people who will live in them, I believe that it would be better for the environment without us really even trying to be. Brown (2009) writes about, Richard Register, an author he agrees with “For Register, the design of the city and its buildings become a part of the local landscape, capitalizing on the local ecology” (pg. 147). This is exactly how I think cities should be built or redesigned to emulate. It will allow for urban vegetable gardens, better heating and cooling, and recyclable water (pg. 147). Brown (2009) then moves on to discuss what would happen if the world oil production went downhill (pg. 151). He then writes that “Countries with well-developed urban transit systems and a mature bicycle infrastructure are much better positioned to withstand the stresses” (pg. 150-151). I believe that the Florida, as is, would go down in flames because we have no mass urban transport that connects main cities in Florida; people would not be able to go anywhere outside of their direct area without a car. Bicycles would work in more urban areas but Florida also has a large amount of suburban and …show more content…
I feel that we could all pick up something from what Susan Orlean learned about development in Florida, what the scientists learned about the connection of rainfall and South Florida, from how FGCU works, and from how Plan B thinks. Susan Orlean learned of the atrocious things that happened to Florida with real estate scams. The scientists learned how developing land affects rainfall. These are complications that we should strive to prevent. FGCU leads an advanced passage of expansion that considers the environmental effects with every step they take. Plan B gives us viable and healthy alternatives to the kind of environment we live in today. With all of this in mind, I believe that if the world would decelerate a small amount and consider the effects on the environment, before we started changing and developing everything, we would not have so many horrible
