One of the first dental experiences I had other than shadowing was at a North Carolina Missions of Mercy clinic. At these clinics, the need for dentistry cannot be ignored. It is apparent immediately when at these clinics. People arrive at the clinic early, even some the night before the clinic, forming a line of patients in pain and struggling with dental problems. Although there are challenges as with many health professions, the joys of helping others provide enough motivation for me to pursue dentistry. As opposed to other health fields, dentistry provides an opportunity to give someone a new outlook on life by relieving their pain or helping create a new, cheerful smile. Dentistry involves diagnosing a problem and then fixing the problem soon thereafter with methods other than simply medicine. It is for this practicality that I feel the dental field best suits me. This type of work inspires me to pursue dentistry so that one day I can help the people of the community that I live in and
