Fridman highlights the importance of being an outcast by fearlessly stating how wrong society is for degrading nerds instead of praising them for being intellectually “curious and academically serious” (Fridman, lines 4-5). By identifying nerds as intellectuals who are curious and serious academically, it can be stated that Fridman views the intelligent as highly valuable. By describing them as intellectuals, it concludes the amount of respect he has towards them and is the reason why he praises them from the start. His claim, however, is emphasized as soon as he presents Webster’s New World Dictionary’s definition of an outcast being “a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens” (Fridman, lines 6-7). In the track “God Help the Outcasts,” Esmerelda sings a song of prayer, asking God for help. It shows us how helpless and desperate Esmerelda is, how hopelessly trapped she was in the cathedral and how hopeless the situation of the gypsies seems like. The composers made this song into a prayer, metaphorically describing how no one on earth will have helped them. The part of the song where the other characters in the cathedral sing shows how genuine Esmerelda’s prayer is. The others ask for wealth and glory, while all she asks is for freedom, for the oppression of her people to end.…
