The Online Islands Project

There are a plethora of possible research study’s that could be conducted in order to engage students and provide them with valuable knowledge. One research study that I previously participated in at Indian River State College in my honors statistics course was the islands project. The online islands project allowed students to collect a random sample from hundreds of people on separate islands and in separate towns. On this online site students were able to conduct study’s on the people they randomly selected such as provide them with food, alcohol, drugs and many other things then have the people perform an activity such as a workout, memory test, or a variety of health exams. The people that were selected on the online islands project reflect a real life sample of people and how they would be …show more content…
To complete this I first did research by reading scientific journals that had done similar testing. My observations from the scientific journals was that smoking would have an acute effect of someone’s blood pressure. After I collected the research I then went onto the islands project and gathered a random sample of people to study. The random sample was selected using an online random number generator that helped selected 10 participates from each town at random. Once all of the participants were selected they were split into a control group and an experimental group. The control group was required to eat a piece of liquorice and measure their blood pressure. The experimental group was required to smoke a cigarette and then have their blood pressure measured. Once they completed these activities the results and data were collected and put into a Microsoft excel spread sheet for statistical comparison. Each group got analyzed in search for statistical significance as well as looking for R squared and the P

In the article, the author claims that children growing up in low-income families tend to have higher rate of obesity, which implies a negative correlation between income and obesity rate. To support his point, the writer used the model built by University of Michigan Health System based on the data from 111,799 Massachusetts students. The model presents that “every 1 percent increasing in low-income status is associated with 1.17 percent increase in rates of obese students”, which strongly advocates the correlation between the two factors: the lower the family’s income is, the higher possibility for the child to be overweight. There are several explanations can help to illustrate this correlation.…

The writings I’ve worked on for the Research Problem have helped me towards achieving course learning outcome number 2: "Produce an extended writing project that uses research methods and research genres to explore a topic applicable to the course and that draws substantively on concepts from primary and/or secondary sources." From Beaufort, I learned that limiting your writing to one discourse community produces writers who are ill-prepared, highly demotivated and incompetent “products” (Beaufort 7). Hence, I had to learn subject matter knowledge, genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge and the writing process knowledge concerning my professional field. By acquiring this knowledge, I was able to begin my becoming as a competent writer. From Johns and Swales, I learned what the term “discourse community” means.…

The data that is needed is to determine what will work for the student to succeed in their course with a passing grade. Dilemmas in “The possibility of An Island” Most of the "future" theme novels put the sights or utopian outer space science and technology and prosperity and make a fictional order of higher envy of modern civilization. While I feel Michelle’s novel is just on the opposite. The future of the world will return to the possibility of a "dilemma". The "Island" seems to exist, perhaps technology can help them achieve that desire; it seems out of reach, because it is only with the presence of "possibility", after the departure, may never end.…

Researchers are tasked with choosing the most relevant method to study a particular phenomenon. In the planning stages of a study, the researcher must decide whether to collect data that is quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. Quantitative research is defined by Creswell (2014) as “a means for testing objective theories by examining the relationship among variables” (p. 247). Quantitative data is typically collected in numerical form and analyzed using statistical analysis. Furthermore, quantitative data is generally used when cause-and-effect relationships are not under investigation (Leedy & Ormond, 2010).…
