For instance, the boy that was kept in the cellar shows a lack of independent thought (Guin 3). This is because he didn’t choose to be placed there and take the weight that was forced upon him. Nobody would choose to be put in terrible conditions and be completely separated from people thus showing the lack of independent thought he had on being put in this unknown isolated place. In addition, the way the society thinks about the boy shows a lack of independent thought (Guin 3-4). This is important because most of the people in the society were so naive that they believed that if this boy took their pain and sadness that they would be truly happy. Although not everyone was in agreement with this, for the ones who didn't leave Omelas, it shows there was a lack of independent thought for the ones who stayed. Even though some people stayed in this society the ones who left showed true independent thought and courage because they had their own opinions on the subject and left while most people stayed.
