“The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” is a story depicting an almost perfect, eloquent, and joyous utopian society which seems too good to be true; and it is. The wellbeing of this society, however, comes with a price. The unjust treatment of the child in this story, a martyr, is the only way to keep this flourishing society intact. Kept in a confined space, neglect from any humane interaction, the child writhes in suffering just as Jesus did on the cross to cleanse his people of sin. Is the mistreatment of the child in Omelas a symbolic representation of sacrifice in religion?
