One of the first attempts to create a Utopian Society that caught my eye was the Oneida Community created in Kenwood, New York by Pastor John Humphrey Noyes. This community is based on Christianity yet they stressed the socialist lifestyle. These colonists believed in what they referred to as “complex marriage.” It meant they were all married to each other and monogamy was rejected. The community as a whole raised the children together. His idea of utopia was to build an octagon shaped community filled with vegetarians; however he was unable to find enough like-minded individuals to occupy the community. He eventually allowed some meat eaters to join his utopia with promises of grandeur. A lot of the members left or died from disease within a few months of the beginning of this budding town.
In 1825 social reformer, Robert Owen, created New Harmony located in Indiana. His idea of a Utopia was to have a city full of the smartest scientists to study natural philosophy and Science but without the disruptions of modern life. These members traveled to their new home on a boat and were known as the “Boatload of knowledge” (Dunn). Things were great for four years until economic issues tore them apart. One thing that lasted after the end of New Harmony was the Western Center for Scientific Discovery
