Medical technology is now readily available and more research is being done towards the changes of mental capacities in older adults. With these newfound pieces of knowledge, we can find some comfort in knowing it was not as terrible as it was generations ago. That being said, times have indeed changed over the years. One reason why I think more people are having anxiety is because there is added stress to what we do with the realization that we don’t have much time left but we also know our life can be extended to a certain degree with the help of medical developments which then only adds to the illusion of time of which we have left. Most common fears I have noticed which kept appearing after interviewing some adults was they had reservations about their finances, independence, and how they will react to their body changes when it occurs. The most common worry relating to finances was having enough money to live on after retirement. I am now old enough to recognize the importance of economy and having a job. I’m afraid for what may happen if I graduate but no hospital will hire me due to not having enough experience of working there. To me, being independent is an important virtue to have. It teaches you to be self-sufficient and helps gain new insights about yourself after trying new things. As people age, the more they are used to taking control of things by themselves and not having to depend on one another. There will come a point, as we all know, when we will have to become dependent on someone else. Either if it is a family member or a stranger in a nursing home. That time will eventually come and all we can do is prepare for the best we can and postpone the inevitable as long as possible. Growing old, it has some pros and cons in my opinion. People get wiser beyond their years thanks to a multitude of experiences one will have in their lives. However, in addition to gaining new knowledge, one cannot deny the future becomes harsher as they get older.
