Daundre Barnaby, A Character Analysis

On March 27, 2015, Facebook and Twitter were inundated with the message “Daundre Barnaby, An Olympic Sprinter from Weaver, Drowns.” When I first read this message, I was heart-broken. I desperately wanted it to be a mistake. As the story continued, Daundre, my dear friend, was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean and was swept out to sea by a strong current. Overcome by grief, my emotions were out of control! I was consumed with anger, frustration, and remorse, and at that moment, I knew that my friend’s life had come to an abrupt and untimely end, and because of that fact, my life would never be the same.

Daundre was a local hero who accomplished the goals that he set forth for himself including representing Canada in the 2012 London Olympics

Thus, when given the chance to volunteer in the cancer and trauma department at the Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford Connecticut I was consumed with excitement. I was deeply impressed at the amount of respect and admiration patients exhibited towards their doctors and this inspired me. Most patients suffered from terminal illnesses, but smiled and expressed joy and the beauty of being alive. One particular occurrence that resonates with me occurred while visiting a patient room with free books/magazines. The patient was an elderly lady who was suffering from a heart condition. While in the room, I could hear her heart beat stubbornly within her pigeon chest, and her skin was so fragile it could rupture on anything more than the softest of touches. Her open eyes moved randomly, and they were completely obscured with cataracts it was difficult to tell her eye color. Her hair was wispy over a scalp that shows signs of pressure sores, pink from constant contact with pillow. I raise my voice and asked, “Miss, would you like a book or magazine?” She replied, “It depends on the type of books you have.” I began to describe the genres of books that were present on the cart, and from there we engaged in a thrilling conversation about books she had read. At the end of the conversation, the lady gently held my hand and told me, “Thank you.” I was very astounded by her statement. Over …show more content…
I look forward to learning how to cure sickness, and how to treat patients by using the skills that I will learn. I desire to become a doctor who is able to stand in my patient’s shoes, and to be equal as sensitive and perceptive of my patient’s symptoms. I look forward to making my dreams become a reality and I await with pleasure the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to influence the lives of others through

Thus, I enrolled in a volunteering program at Greenwich Hospital in order to not only encounter a doctor’s working environment, but also to serve the patients who are a member of my community in Greenwich. In the hospital my job can range from sorting and arranging hundreds of mails, escorting patients, helping with maintaining hygiene, to sending flowers to the patients. According to my supervisor and the volunteers’ website, there are approximately a total of 700 volunteers who the staff believe to be the unsound heros of the hospital. Due to the number of volunteers, the staff assign us to different sections of the hospital within which assigning to be an escorter is one of my favorite as it allows me to encounter patients and doctors from different departments. Gradually from observation and conversation with many of the doctors in the hospital and some of my father’s friends I perceived the drudgery, the stress, the paper works, the coordination, the management skills that are necessary for surviving in this field after having endured the hardship of medical school.…

The white cubicle with a constant sound of a machine beeping grew obnoxious ,but as the days past it soon became welcomed. The constant beeping every minute calmed all my worries and fears. There would be times where the beeping would pause and at that moment it felt as if my heart did well. The sound of patterned feet across the room with the occasional conversation on the side distracted me from my surroundings. If it wasn't for the words on the book before me the severance of my environment would engulf me.…

What does it mean to live? Is it to simply eat, work so one can afford living, sleep and do it all over again? Is that going to be enough of a reason by the time one is retired and is in integrity versus despair stage of life as Erik Erikson put it? I personally do not believe so. I believe in order for life to have any meaning, one needs to have goals and a way of impacting the world around them by reaching those goals.…

My grandfather did not want to disturb my studies so I was only told when he was already very ill, thus I felt was very important for me to spend his last moment by his side. It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. My grandfather’s cancer also spurred an interest in nonsurgical treatments of cancer that led me to shadow Dr. Simon Cheng, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2013, in the midst of multiple health issues, my mother was told that she might have breast cancer. Since my father was working in China, I took time off to be with her.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

Most people have heard of the exclusive and instantly activated cancer card, but no one ever mentions an expiration date. I assume that most people stop using their card at some point, but I'm just as certain that there are people out there who will use it indefinitely. After five years, when we get the “all clear” from our doctors, we are released from the chokehold that cancer can have on us. We become survivors, leave cancer behind, and move on with our lives. It's reasonable to think that most cancer cards would expire soon after that.…
