There’s no doubt though that the Olympics will mean a lot of additional visitors.
Briefly putting the social and economic factors to one side, from a sports aspect, what are the benefits?
The Olympics are undoubtedly a fantastic international proving ground for athletes. It gives them the opportunity to compete against athletes of a similar level on an international stage. This gives them the opportunity to compare themselves against each other and to determine how good they are internationally.

Italy has competed at all the modern Olympic Games with the exception of the sparsely attended 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.
Italy has taken part in all the Winter Olympic Games, winning 114 medals, and 577 medals at the Summer Olympic Games. Italy has won a total of 243 gold medals which makes them the 5th most successful country in Olympic history, after the USA, the Soviet Union, Germany and Great Britain.
