Older Adult Interview Essay

The older adult has always been a mysterious individual. Seeing them in all aspect of life and knowing that I am staring into my future, there is no escaping the creaky knees, the teeth loss, vision loss and any number of other negative feelings I have towards aging. The name of the interviewee has been changed to protect their confidentiality. She will be called "Gloria.” She was chosen because she was an older adult and seems to have an outgoing active personality. We very recently became acquainted when I perused the boutique and had not spoken on a personal level prior to the interview. She appeared open and comfortable with herself. People age. She then offered me an opportunity to come into the store on one of the nights that she had a gathering in the store and play dress up. She stated she encouraged the ladies to come to the store and try on items so they can be pretty and colorful. She spoke about her different groups of friends and that they went dancing and shaking their fannies. Gloria informed me she had friends who were of different ages and she loved being around people. I hesitated to list them because I was unwilling to put these thoughts into words. I am able to analyze my thoughts and have done so and have already realized that the thoughts are fear based. My grandmother is still alive; when I was a teenager I witnessed her climbing a tree. This was a major feat to me, as I cannot do so. I have seen many older adults do things and express knowledge that I do not possess. Yet, I still have these notions of their ability. How does one rid their thoughts of things that are recognized as ignorant? I have worked on this matter but it still afflicts my mind. I am thoroughly impressed with Gloria and her independence. She does what she wants and goes where she wants. She is answerable to only herself. I envy her comfort in her
