Love in Deuteronomy

The use of the word Love is seen 15 times in Deuteronomy which shows the importance of love towards not only our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, the love we are to extend to our neighbor, the love we have for the Lord and of course the love the Lord freely gives to us. In the Old Testament the evidence of God’s love is seen repeatedly. In Deuteronomy 6:4-5 the passage is taken from a very well-known Old Testament passage that is later referenced in the New Testament. We are directed to use all of our being to love the Lord.
The evidence of God’s love is also revealed in (Deut 7:6-8,Deut 10:15, Deut 14:2) by choosing the Israelites as His chosen people, liberating them from the bondage of Egypt as well as showing the presence of his power by revealing himself to them on Mount Sinai (Deut 1:6). In addition, the Lord proceeds a means of survival for the Israelites in the wilderness on their journey to the promise Land. This love is further expanded on in Deut 6:6-8 when we see the central commandment from Jesus to love, which in this particular instance love is considered to be law. From Deuteronomy 10:12, 20-21 – “serve, fear, walk in his ways, hold fast, cling,” We see that this is the crucial obligation or loyalty is reserved exclusively to God.
