In the video “Greek Tragedy,” Grant Voth explains the meaning of Greek “tragedy.” It could be defined as a serious play or written work, one which shows that a person’s sins lead to consequences. An example of a literary work that held meaning to Greek tragedy was a trilogy of Aeschylus. The trilogy is composed of difficult choices that characters have to decide upon and whom gained consequences based on their actions. In the first book of the trilogy, after fighting from the Trojan War, Agamemnon was murdered by his wife Cassandra and her lover.…
Powerful and harsh are the gods of ancient Greece. They are to be respected, worshipped and feared in order to live a peaceful and long life. Hesiod represents these gods in similar but contrasting ways through the tale of Prometheus and Pandora in his poems, Works and Days and The Theogony. Though both poems are different and take on a different form they are both considered wisdom literature because we learn a lesson of right and wrong from the tales being told. In these poems we examine the gods through the eyes of the man working for a living and through the eyes of the gods fighting for their place among themselves in Olympus.…
In A Raisin in the sun, Lorraine Hansberry uses an allusion to compare Walter Lee to the mythical Prometheus (856). George called Walter Lee “Prometheus” because, “Prometheus" fits Walter's passionate temperament. Prometheus was a Greek God from ancient Greek Myths who did not fight the Olympians. Prometheus was one of the two men who were not locked under the earth and the two men were given jobs. Prometheus started to think of using his job as revenge against the Olympians, because although he was not imprisoned under the earth with the rest of his kind he was still imprisoned in some sort of way.…
One day, Zeus decided to give all of the creatures on earth what he called "differences." The Gods were bored of watching both humans and animals eat, sleep, and wander around. Zeus called for Epimetheus, another God who was not busy at the time, and gave him two boxes. The big box was filled with Zeus's differences. Zeus told Epimetheus to pass them out to the creatures on earth.…
Because of this he was not punished with the rest of the Titans and wasn't sent to the underworld like the rest of them. Prometheus was known to be the protector and benefactor of the mortal world. Prometheus tricked Zeus in an event called Trick at Mecone. He asked Zeus to choose between two offerings, one being beef inside of…
Prometheus is a titan who sided with the greek gods during the Titanomachy, a war between titans and gods. Because Prometheus sided with the gods he was able to avoid being set to tartarus. Prometheus’ siblings are Atlas titan of astronomy and navigation, Menoetius titan of Violent anger, and Epimetheus (afterthought).…
After leaving him on his own he stole fire from the gods and gave it to the humans, however, the gods discovered him and punished him every day for eternity. Prometheus, and the other humans, threatened the gods with the power of fire, in the same way the Creature caused Frankenstein to feel threatened. The Creature’s ugly guise and lack of typical human appearance made the other characters draw conclusions that he was dangerous. Therefore, the Creature holds power over the society they live in because of the fear he constantly arouses in…
In the short of “The Myth of Prometheus” by an unknown author, Prometheus is the Archetypal Hero of the myth. He shows these characteristics by being the protagonist, answering the challenge, and sacrificing himself. Prometheus first shows he is a hero by being the protagonist of the myth when he tricks Zeus into taking the pile of offerings that is filled with fat and bone, instead of the better pile. This shows Prometheus as the protagonist because he tricks Zeus to advocate the cause of man. When Prometheus advocates for cause of humans, he shows himself to be the protagonist, which is a characteristic of an Archetypal Hero.…
Zeus had two servants that held Prometheus to a mountain in Caucasus. Zeus makes them all against Prometheus for all the wrong he has done like fire to human beings. Aeschylus presented Prometheus as a strong cold hearted god with no sympathy. His overall significant was stealing…
Zeus, the God of Olympus, is a god who instills fear upon immortal gods and goddesses; therefore, it is through Prometheus’s care for the humans that he gathers the courage necessary to attempt to deceive Zeus. Prometheus deceives Zeus through an ox which Prometheus has adjusted the body parts of. Prometheus makes the boned section of the ox appear big and juicy with a thick layer of fat over the bones; on the other hand, he assembles the part of the ox with meat to appear skinny and rotten. Furthermore, Zeus fails to see through the work of Prometheus and chooses the bones of the ox covered in fat as the type of sacrifice that the humans would give up to the gods. When Zeus realizes that he has been tricked, he takes fire away from mankind as a punishment since men could not eat meat without the use of…
Zeus is known as the supreme ruler of both gods and men, He is depicted in both the Iliad and Prometheus Bond. Each story shows a different perspective as to how the immortals view Zeus, and how Zeus views both the immortals and men. For instance, the daughters of Oceanus feared that Zeus would hear Prometheus talking bad of Zeus. Also we see that the gods are always betrayed as going against Zeus' orders behind his back, but no matter what the case, Zeus always finds out about it. Both stories are similar in the way that either way there are immortals that are against Zeus, and immortals that follow him all the way and never turn against him or talk badly about him.…
According to Walter Burkert, historian of Greek Religion, “myth is a traditional tale with secondary, partial reference to something of collective importance”, meaning that, myths were told and used for the specific purpose of informing the cumulative population of certain events, ideas, and or lessons. Myths were pre-scientific ways the Greeks used to explain natural phenomenon and were often tales of morality; acting as the guide of how people should behave and conduct themselves within social structures. Myths established the ground rules of what was expected in society, and more often times than not, depicted the practice of ideal behaviors and characteristics wanted by Greek civilization. The relationships between parents and children…
In Greek mythology there are many gods and goddesses who make up some people’s beliefs. One of those gods is Hephaestus, the god of fire. He is very important in Greek mythology because he was the son of Hera and Zeus, and would basically be the source for when god’s needed reliable weapons. The god of fire was a sibling to Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Athena, Ares, and Persephone (greekgoddesses.net). His children were Euklela, Eupheme, Euthenia, Philophrosyne, Thaleia, Palikoi, Erikthonios, and Kaberiroi.…
Zeus gains desire for building things that can be destroyed but Prometheus’ attitude rubs off by giving them the strength to never fold even when you’re helpless. This is where Prometheus gains power over Zeus. While Prometheus is simply mortal to Zeus, he can foresee his destiny, which is death because Zeus cannot see his own fortune. Zeus demonstrates his uneasiness and fear that his sentence maybe reality. Here we see an exchange of power between Zeus and Prometheus.…
Aeschylus is postulated to be the author of Prometheus Bound, written in the mid to late fifth century BCE. The story follows Zeus’ punishment of Prometheus, a Titan of old, for for bestowing the gifts of fire and civilization to humankind in spite of Zeus’ desire to destroy humans. For his actions, Prometheus is brought to Scythia, where he is chained eternally to a rock by Hephaestus’ impermeable chains. The scene quoted above depicts the encounter between Prometheus and his fellow Titan, Oceanus. Oceanus expresses his pity and sorrow for Prometheus and offers to plead to Zeus for his release.…
