In Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily Grierson is a symbol for the old South and the townspeople represent the new South. After the Civil War ends, the Grierson family falls on hard times. Both Emily and her father, the last of the older generation, continue to live as if they are living in old times—the past. Emily’s father dies when she is about thirty years old, which surprises her.
