The story about the Old man starts off with, “ He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish”(pg.1). Yet what’s funny, is that the Old man still goes out everyday to fish even after he hasn’t had any luck. The reason for this is because he has persistence, which pushes him along with the boy’s motivation to keep going and to keep hustling toward his goal of being a successful fisherman. A second time within the story that brings out the old man 's persistence is when he arm wrestled with the young man at a tavern. The old man was obviously out gunned, considering that his rival had the title of, “ The Strongest Man on the Docks”. He states that, “ the match had started on a Sunday morning and ended on a Monday morning”(pg.70). Of course the Old man had a lot of resistance when going up against his opponent, but because he stayed strong, confident, and most of all persistent, he defeated him. Ernest Hemingway wrote the book, “ The old man in the sea” to inform his readers about the importance of having faith if very difficult times, to always persistent at reaching your goal, and to enjoy the little things in life that bring yourself back that you living in the present. Hemingway used the character of the old man to demonstrate all of these things in life that you must inherit. What he was hoping when he wrote the book was to inspire anyone who read it to follow these different types of mindsets so that you as an individual could become the person you were meant to be all along, all the while making the world a better place with your gifts and
