Reflection Essay: "The Old Man and the Sea"

"The Old Man and the Sea" is truly an inspiring work from Hemingway. I've learned about old age, courage, pride, machismo, divinity in death and brotherhood. Also, this novella has given me insight into the life of a fisherman, the dangers they can face and the prizes they receive. I was also startled by the fact that Hemingway is really proud of machismo, and he shows this by presenting us Santiago, an old man who has a male bravado. This will affect my opinions in the future because I have sometimes portrayed men as rowdy and somewhat bad and quite dependent on women. I will give the following example to prove my point, "But I will show him what a man can do and what a man endures."

He always respected the animals that were worthy. However, he somewhat disliked that animals that were greedy and evil at heart. For example, the sharks that ate his honorable "brother" (marlin) were considered evil. There are many examples where he had shown love for nature and greatly respected it. This is an example, "He was very fond of flying fish as they were his principal friends on the ocean." (Hemingway, 20). I have always liked nature, and seeing a fictional character value the natural world as I do, made me feel a bonding and personal connection with Santiago. Also, this relates to brotherhood between every living thing that exists in this world. Santiago, in my opinion, is an old man who appreciates everything that moves and breathes, and this shows …show more content…
This is a quote from the book, "They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry." (Hemingway, 6). It just goes to show that humans, by nature, point out the mistakes and faults of others, instead of accepting their accomplishments and their true character. Before, Santiago caught a marlin every day for three weeks in a row! If there was a break or a pause in that timespan, it would be quite ordinary but he caught them consecutively. Hemingway quotes: "Others, of the older fishermen, looked at him and were sad. But they did not show it…" (Hemingway, 6). That is one part that I really hate about "The Old Man and the Sea" because it shows mockery and inconsiderate behavior. This relates with brotherhood because brotherhood relies on the sole feelings and connections with one another. Brothers and sisters of the world should help each other instead of looking down at one another. At the end, the fishermen realized the strength of

Hemingway alludes the old man to Christ through his struggles; yet, these allusions function merely as an opportunity for readers to form connections with the character. Santiago, throughout the novel, works towards one goal: catching the fish. However, in the end, he returns home with a skeleton, “eighteen feet from nose to tail” (Hemingway 122). Christ lived his life for one goal, but he completed that goal by dying for humanity’s sins so “that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (Holman Christian Standard Bible, John 3.16). In this sense, Santiago never fully lives up to the savior name.…

As Santiago prepares himself to further try to catch the fish, he advises himself, “‘You better be fearless and confident yourself, old man’” (Hemingway 84). Santiago knew that being confident in himself would be an important step on the road to catching this fish. Hemingway uses this dialogue to help build the Old Man’s character as willing and withstanding, as well as further show how he develops and endures throughout the text. Along with dialogue, Hemingway uses metaphors to help show how much Santiago endures.…
