The Old Man Analysis

The Old Man is a short story written by the ever so talented Daphne du Maurier. The story is one of inquisition into lives of a strange family, as well as tragedy. It exhibits so many different elements of writing that is it had to choose some to highlight. Du Maurier has a style that is unlike any other published author I have ever read. The story flows and develops so well, it is astonishing. Elements of plot development and scenery twist hand in hand to create an exquisite story, which is no doubt, an absoulte joy to read. Du Maurier also creates and develops characters, in such a manner, that any author should be jealous of. She also has outstanding amounts off idea development and creativity. The average author would have to ponder long and hard, to even come close to the idea development of Du Maurier. It is evident throughout the entire story, of ideas that only a proficient writer like herself could display. The entire underlying idea of the story is almost unmatched. The way she develops the plot, and has the reader believing they know everything, only to suddenly flip their complete understanding of the story upside down, is impeccable. Few writers are known to have such imagination and idea development. The stories ending paragraph could be compared to John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The endings both involve tragedy, and completely change the entire plot of the story. The realization that the family was not of human species, completely changed the work.
