The Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom were three major periods in ancient Egyptian history. The social structure in these time periods were classified by pharaohs, nobles, priest, merchants, commoners and slaves. However, slaves were only seen in the New Kingdom of Egypt. In Egypt, the pharaoh was a king that retained absolute power over the people, resources, and land (PARAPHRASE EGYPT 259 EXPERIENCING POWER). Maintaining order and harmony was a major duty of the pharaoh. Ancient Egyptian were able to own property and occasionally own a business. Priestesses were found throughout Egypt. In addition, a few females were pharaohs. Divorce was allowed in ancient Egypt, but adultery was strictly forbidden. Wealthy families were able to live a life of leisure. The upper class had a healthier diet that consisted of meat, and lower classes consumed mostly bread. Wealthier citizens were able to afford medical attention while poorer Egyptians had to do without.
