The Office Satire

My favorite television show of all time is definitely the series aired on NBC The Office. The Office is an American comedy series adapted from a United Kingdom version that aired for a two short years. The television series has a unique mockumentary style applied to it to mock a serious documentary series in order to satirize the subject meant to cover. The Office is found humorous to the average person because the character’s workday consists of ego clashes and inappropriate behavior. I believe the series became successful due to the relatability of the series is common among the average American, making the series even more desirable to watch.

A perfect example of the satire used in The Office, is an episode title Women’s Appreciation which occurs in season 3 episode 21. The episode is opened with the character, PhyllisVance (Phyllis Smith), walking in to the office of Dunder Mifflin with the most devastating look on her face. Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) the secretary of the office approaches Phyllis asking basically what’s wrong and that is when Phyllis reveals that she had been flashed by unknown man on the way in to work that morning. The whole office gathers around asking her about the experience in a concerned manner for their fellow co-worker. When Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), Michael Scott’s want to be right hand man and stickler of office rules, over hears the conversation and runs to the parking lot to investigate. Around this time Michael Scott walks in and asks what the whole commotion is about. Once they inform Michael about the situation, he starts making jokes like, Why Phyllis? Have they not seen various other younger women of the office? He then proceeds to laugh and cover his whole body with his jacket placing his hand down his pants and putting his index finger through the zipper symbolizing the flashes private area. After an inclusive investigation of the parking lot Dwight …show more content…
Among other things, he tells them Jan has been videotaping them having sex and watching it with him afterwards. All the women assure Michael that Jan's behavior is not normal and urge him to get out of the relationship. He remains conflicted about what he should do about Jan, but at Phyllis's prompting he finally admits to himself that he wants to break up with her. Michael thanks them for their help by treating them to one item each at Victoria's Secret. On the drive back, Pam takes a step toward asserting herself by changing a flat tire on Meredith Palmer's (Kate Flannery) car. At the office, Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner) sneaks into the women's bathroom and discovers a plush waiting room. The other men soon join him.
Upon returning to the office, Michael calls Jan to end their relationship, doing so by leaving a voicemail message when she fails to answer. Jan walks into his office to apologize in person for the earlier proposal she left him with, but when she receives Michael's voicemail, she walks out in silence. The episode ends with Jim informing Dwight he saw the flasher two minutes before in the women's bathroom "above the sink". Dwight dashes to the bathroom and examines the mirror where someone had etched a mustache similar to the sketch's. Dwight realizes the prank and curses

In today’s society we are introduced to many problems that are always put to the side and is never taken care of because people are so in denial and don’t want to face the truth. In the simpsons intro the writer uses satire( the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues) to explore the flaws of society through his made up fictional characters. Some issues that I have come to a realization are the fact that parents in this century are not paying enough attention to their children and holding them fully responsible for their own actions. In other words children are doing whatever they please with no care whatsoever in the world because they know that there is no consequences for their actions. This also causes these children and teens to misbehave in class which leads to a distraction that takes away learning from kids whom parents actually send them to school to learn.…

Who says that’s cartoons aren’t allowed to use profanity and make fun of today’s society? Family guy awakens the subconscious and make the conscious aware. Family guy may have some rated R episodes and jokes but if you look at the show at a deeper perspective than just a face value, you will see the insightful meaning. Based on Peacocke’s article I would recommend young adults and adults to watch the show Family guy. Peacocke talks about her own struggle with the shows seemingly offensive humor.…

    Satire In Brave New World

Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…
