Let me tell the story, Muse, of the man of many ways, the man who alone survived the trials and quests of the gods, and reclaimed his throne on the island of Ithaca. And let me tell of The Sacker of Troy, Son of Laertes and Ruler of Ithaca!Let me tell of Odysseus’s further struggle to protect his homeland!
The southern part of Ithaca was always warm and breezy, the waves kissing the sandy beaches, and the sun always shining on the tops of trees. And it was this area of Ithaca where Alkaios chose to land his fleet of ships. For those who did not who Alkaios was, he was known as an extremely strong individual with some of the best fighters in the world under his command. He hopped over the edge of the boat onto the sand, and called to his men

“Come with me son, and Lysimachus, for we have to work quickly”
“What do we have to do Father?”.Telemachus asked
Odysseus responded “It will be simple, for since we do not have the personnel to fight Alkaios men, we can take most of them out with traps and ambushes, now hurry, for we must collect Eumaeus and Philoetius to help” Odysseus moved quickly, the others moving behind him, to the place where Eumaeus and Philoetius resided. Odysseus had no time for greetings and told the now four members what to do. He instructed Telemachus and Lysimachus to get the remaining battle worthy men ready for fighting, and told Eumaeus and Philoetius to get other men to gather leaves and dig holes by the jungle area where Alkaios’s men were

He showed the small group how to make quick traps with the new knowledge that he had just acquired from Athena and set the men off. And with the two sets of men going off on their assigned tasks, Odysseus made his way to the Southern Shores of Ithaca where he crept like a panther waiting to spring and pounce an unsuspecting victim, quietly crawling towards the beach where he could count the men sleeping under the sun. He found a decent cover of trees and bushes and kneeled down to spy on his targets. It had only been about 2 hours since Odysseus had been alerted to the exsistence of Alkaios the Invader. Odysseus of Ithaca understood Lysimachus’s panic, for there were around 1500 well armoured, well armed men, who were in their prime, strong and healthy from a life of looting and plundering. Behind them on the shore were two massive boats with the symbol of Zeus on the hull of the ships. Most of the men were sleeping but there were around 5 up and walking, talking with the sentry, and moving about the beaches, checking the ropes on the boats. ‘Clearly professionals’, thought Odysseus, ‘I must see what we have to fight them’ Odysseus stayed for another hour, watching as more and more of Alkaios men woke and put on

In Book 5, Lines 394-399 of his Odyssey, Homer offers the following simile: “And as welcome as the show of life again in a father is to his children, when he has lain sick, suffering strong pains, and wasting long away, and the hateful death spirit has brushed him, but then, and it is welcome, the gods set him free of his sickness, so welcome appeared land and forest now to Odysseus, and he swam, pressing on, so as to set foot on the mainland”. In this paper, I will argue that although the surface meaning of this passage is that the land for Odysseus is like the recovery of a sick father for a child, the deeper meaning is that the passage and other textual evidence indicate several times that Odysseus is more like the father. This comparison anticipates the end of the book when Odysseus…
