“An epic is not made by piecing together a set of heroic lays, adjusting their discrepancies and making them into a continuous narrative (Lascelles Abercrombie).” The majority of people think that because there are a Greek gods and a hero with a plot that makes an epic, but The Odyssey shows that there are many other things that create an epic. An epic reflects universal concerns that are happening today while using fiction to help demonstrate the problems. Odysseus faces many problems and goes to many different lands to get home. The Odyssey reflects all major tenets of an epic because it has an epic plot and setting, epic hero and archetypes, and epic themes. Lines 35-40 page 1252 it states “Here is my lord Odysseus’ hunting bow. Bend and string it if you it if you can. Who sends an arrow through iron axe-helve sockets, twelve in line? I join my life with his, and leave this place, my home, my rich and beautiful bridal house, forever to be remembered, though I dream it only.”
As well as the other elements of an epic the most important one is an epic theme. Throughout the epic the fate of Ithaca is based on Odysseus, and if he makes it home too his kingdom or not. On page 1249 lines 30-40 it states “the form Lord Odysseus left him, going to Troy, you’d see him swift and strong. He never shrank from any savage thing he’d brought to bay to in the deep woods; on the scent no other dog kept up with him. His owner died abroad, and here the women slaves will take no care of him.” Odysseus is thinking if they can’t take care his dog when he is gone for 20 years then how did they take care of his kingdom. Odysseus coming home changed the outcome of who was going to be king of Ithaca. In the movie when Odysseus gets back home everything is a mess, so he teams up with his son to gets rid of the
