The Odyssey Journey

The journey matters more than the destination in most situations because the destination does not teach one about life however the journey teaches one several lessons. In my journey’s I learned many things from the adventure that I endured rather than the destination. When I moved to the United States from Germany in sixth grade although the destination had a huge impact on my life the month leading up to my international move had some of the greatest impacts on me. When I was told that we were moving to the United States I was scared, happy, and upset all at the same time but it taught me that you have to sacrifice many things for your own happiness and your family. During the journey people gain knowledge from the experiences one endures …show more content…
As Odysseus did in “Scylla and Charybdis” as well in “The Cattle of the Sun God” in The Odyssey. During Odysseus’ adventures to get home to Ithaka in Greece he learned many things especially in his encounters with the Scylla and Charybdis and the Sun God. “I told them nothing as they could do nothing they would have dropped their oars” (Homer 784-785). Odysseus did not trust his men as he had full right to because he knew how his men act in high stress situations. Odysseus’ judgment kept his men as well as himself alive however in “The Cattle of the Sun God” he decides to trust his men although he was told the consequences if his men were to eat Helios’ cattle by Tiresias. “Old shipmates, our stores are in the ship’s hold, food and drink; the cattle here are not for our provision or we will pay dearly for it” (Homer 837-840). Although Tiresias made it extremely clear to Odysseus what would happen if he left his men to eat the cattle. Odysseus stayed in the bow of the ship to pray and sleep and his men ate the beeves he trusted his men even though shown earlier in the story he had better judgement than to trust his …show more content…
In the essay it shows how returning home is necessary as it is for emperor penguins. “Make brutal migrations each year around Antarctica to breed and raise their chicks” (Elliot). Much like when the emperor penguins make great sacrifice one must take risks in order to ensure the safety and happiness of one's friends and family. Although the destination may be wonderful without stress or work one must think about the future and know that there is a home to return to. In conclusion, the journey matters more than the destination in my personal experiences. Such as from when I took the biggest move of my life from Germany to the United States. The journey I endured taught me lessons which have shaped what kind of person I am today. As well the journey taught me that one has to return home no matter how hard the journey is. Although sometimes the journey has negative effects one will learn to not make the same mistakes again. From the stories it is clear how important the journey is compared to the destination

In, The Odyssey, by Homer the character Odysseus displays the characteristics of curiousity, deceitfulness, and determination. Throughout the entire story Odysseus is exploring the cyclops belongings, that eventually gets him in trouble. An example of this is when Odysseus goes into the Cyclop’s cave, “I brought along, and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon [...] We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield, to pasture his fat sheep, so we looked round at everything inside.”…

First off, Odysseus shows Loyalty to his crew even when he received disloyalty in return. In book 10 when they came across the island of Aeaea and Circe, Elpenor alerts the leader that his colleagues were transformed into swine. Odysseus went on to go save them instead of leaving them behind on the island. Once he met with Circe, it wouldn't work if he just asked her to let them go. Instead he respectfully trusts Hermes and does as he is told to not to refuse the Nymph with the lovely braids.…

He tricked the Cyclops into eating and drinking heavily, and while it was asleep his crew drove a charred stake into its eye. Overnight, Odysseus comes up with the idea to tie them up to the undersides of the Cyclops’s rams. The following morning, the Cyclops lets his livestock out, and Odysseus and his crew manage to escape to their boat. Had Odysseus not come up with this idea, his crew and him would have been stuck in the Cyclops’s cave and likely killed by him. This excerpt is another example of how great Odysseus was as a…

I believe that I would be a good candidate for the Grayling Generating Station Limited Partnership Scholarship. Through the following paragraphs I hope to demonstrate my suitability as a recipient of this scholarship. “It’s not where you start it’s where you finish” is a famous song lyric that applies to my life story. When Odysseus goes to the Island of Circe, she tells him the course he must talk and ways to avoid trouble. After Circe tells him this, Odysseus tells his men “then we die with our eyes open, if we are going to die, or know what death we baffle if we can.(783/689-690)” Odysseus is being open with his men, he is telling them that at one point in their journey home, they will all die, and that is loyalty. He did not have to tell his men that they all were going to die but he did. As Odysseus was approaching the Sirens island, he told his men to put beeswax in their ears so that they would not hear the sirens song. He then told them to tie him up because he has to listen to the sirens song.…

In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

Willa Cather, an American author, said, “The end is nothing; the road is all.” She is correct in saying this because the importance of the journey is far greater than that of the destination. We do not simply get from the starting line to finish line at the snap oef a finger, but our completion of the race is based on all the different decisions that we make in between. Three summers ago, my Mom, sister, and I drove from Oklahoma to Florida for our summer vacation. The drive lasted roughly eighteen hours, but it felt like much longer than that.…

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

Life puts us through a lot of obstacles but we still see the beauty of life in the future. Moving to a foreign country can be a big challenge. The three big challenges when I moved to the United States of America were leaving my family, learning new languages, and finding a job. I was 18 years old when I came to America.…

Odysseus never trusts his crew with steering the ship and therefore doesn’t trust them with the bag of “gold”. He decides to “[work] the vessel’s sheet [himself], no letup, never trusting the ropes to any other mate” which should not be the case with your crewmembers. Creating this distrust between them just makes the crew’s curiosity grow even more. Odysseus lied to his crew, leading them to believe “[he] was hauling troves of gold and silver home” (10.40). This lie shows Odysseus’ distrust This curiosity of theirs destroys their chance of returning home for a while.…
