As Odysseus did in “Scylla and Charybdis” as well in “The Cattle of the Sun God” in The Odyssey. During Odysseus’ adventures to get home to Ithaka in Greece he learned many things especially in his encounters with the Scylla and Charybdis and the Sun God. “I told them nothing as they could do nothing they would have dropped their oars” (Homer 784-785). Odysseus did not trust his men as he had full right to because he knew how his men act in high stress situations. Odysseus’ judgment kept his men as well as himself alive however in “The Cattle of the Sun God” he decides to trust his men although he was told the consequences if his men were to eat Helios’ cattle by Tiresias. “Old shipmates, our stores are in the ship’s hold, food and drink; the cattle here are not for our provision or we will pay dearly for it” (Homer 837-840). Although Tiresias made it extremely clear to Odysseus what would happen if he left his men to eat the cattle. In the essay it shows how returning home is necessary as it is for emperor penguins. “Make brutal migrations each year around Antarctica to breed and raise their chicks” (Elliot). Much like when the emperor penguins make great sacrifice one must take risks in order to ensure the safety and happiness of one's friends and family. Although the destination may be wonderful without stress or work one must think about the future and know that there is a home to return to. In conclusion, the journey matters more than the destination in my personal experiences. Such as from when I took the biggest move of my life from Germany to the United States. The journey I endured taught me lessons which have shaped what kind of person I am today. As well the journey taught me that one has to return home no matter how hard the journey is. Although sometimes the journey has negative effects one will learn to not make the same mistakes again. From the stories it is clear how important the journey is compared to the destination
