You know that guy from The Odyssey(Homer) that is the wife of Penelope that is the character that seems to be a hero but may not fit that persona. In today’s society, a hero is someone who acts with kindness and compassion while helping others. Some people consider Odysseus, the protagonist in Homer’s The Odyssey, a hero because of his intelligence and bravery. Odysseus was one of the ancient greeks favorite heroes because they could relate to him. However, in The Odyssey, Odysseus shows evidence of arrogance, selfishness, and deceptiveness which keeps him from being able to be seen as a modern day hero.
The Counterargument is that Odysseus is a hero because he helped save people. Considering the fact that Odysseus killed many people, this would not allow him to fit the persona of a modern day hero. He was the reason, Polyphemus the Cyclops cursed him and his crew because he said “Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes` son, whose home is on Ithaca.” So based on this information Odysseus and his men got cursed by polyphemus because of Odysseus’ arrogance and for fame. …show more content…
