The Odyssey Entry To Homer's Odyssey

Odyssey Entry #7
Although it was nice being with Circe our time together was nearing an end. It has been a hard trip being at sea, but it will end hopefully soon. Most of the gods have been kind by helping us on our journey. Poseidon seems to be determined to not allow us a safe sail. He is angered by Polyphemus recently being blinded. Polyphemus knew what was coming to him. He treated his guest improperly. Being rude always results in something bad. He is lucky that he is still alive.
It feels great to be back on the sea. Telemachus is probably a fully grown adult by now. Hopefully he is keeping our home safe from intruders. If anything were to happen to Penelope it would be devastating. Not being able to see her ever again would be horrid.

In Chapter 1 of American Odysseys, Timothy Shannon and David Gellman describe the civilizations and dispel some of the myths about America and Africa before the Europeans made contact with either of those places. I found several ideas in this chapter interesting, the modern social problems that have very ancient roots. The first is race relations and the origins of slavery. Chapter One opens with the story of an educated, runaway slave named Ayuba, who eventually earns his freedom through the kindness and generosity of Europeans who when hearing of his plight, raised money to buy his freedom and send him home to Africa. His picture was printed in London newspapers, donors sent gifts, and he visited the royal family.…

Written in the archaic period, around three-hundred years prior to Plato and Diogenes, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey provide substantial evidence to support that the body and the soul both play major roles in forming the concept of self. The emphasis placed on the body through the Homeric lens is evident in the dialogue Hector and Achilles have in The Iliad before their duel. Hector, aware that his chances of victory against Achilles are grim, pleads to Achilles, “Once I’ve stripped your glorious armor, Achilles, I will give your body back to your loyal comrades. Swear you’ll do the same” (Homer 550). Not only is burial a method of honoring the body, but also through Homer’s works, it is apparent that the dead cannot enter the afterlife without proper burial.…
