Captivating Audiences Have you ever wondered how film writers came up with all of the ideas to make fantastic blockbusters? Many of these movies are adapted from their original books, including The Odyssey, which was written by Homer. This novel is believed to be composed near the end of the eighth century. However, the Odyssey became modified by the film writer Andrei Konchalovsky, into a famous movie. The Greek hero Odysseus and conqueror of the Trojan war, attempts to return home to Ithaca with his men. After battle, he finds Poseidon, god of the sea angry at him. Poseidon curses Odysseus making their journey home nearly impossible, lasting ten years with many difficult

For example, Odysseus is very smart and cleaver during situations on his journey, such as his encounter with Scylla and Charbdis. Odysseus chooses to sail into the cave of Scylla, a six-headed monster that eats one man per head to avoid his whole crew being taken under by the whirlpool Charbdis. His good leadership skills force him to make this tough decisions. Odysseus portrays this intelligent characteristic in both the movie and poem. Another similarity is Penelope’s internal feelings while Odysseus is gone. She endured the constant stress of worrying if her husband would ever return home, and remained faithful to him while suitors tempted her into marriage. Her persevering personality is portrayed in both versions of The Odyssey. Odysseus also has a problem with women along his journey home in both the book and the movie. He unfortunately meets Calypso, an incredibly beautiful nymph who holds Odysseus captive for seven years for sexual pleasure and the hopes of marring …show more content…
One being, movies have limited time; so writers must delete or combine parts of the book into specific scenes. As mentioned before, Konchalovsky combined parts of “The Land of the Lotus Eaters” to “Circe’s Island”, by making Circe give the Lotus flower to the men, instead of adding additional information that would drag the story on. Also, to keep the movie more interesting, writers must include additional drama and action to the movie. As mentioned previously, by making Odysseus and his son kill all of the suitors instead of just their leader, which created an exhilarating addition. Lastly, producers add suspense to films and portray happy endings because it is what satisfies the audience. Odysseus is disguised as a beggar to buildup the viewers suspense, while ending the movie in relief when Penelope recognizes him. That way, the audience is left with a happy ending and makes the movie more
