Odysseus’s ruthless actions and tendency to do whatever he needs to do in order to succeed causes him to be unworthy of his heroic title. In order to show how ruthless and willing Odysseus is, Homer writes how the supposed hero either kills his enemy, or he blinds them and that undeniable truth about his ruthlessness in Homer’s words reads, “rammed it/ deep in his crater eye, and leaned on it/ turning it as a shipwright turns a drill/ in planking, having men below the swing/ the two-handled strap that spins it in the groove. / So with our brand we bored that great eye socket/ while blood ran out around the red-hot bar. / Eyelid and lash were seared; the pierced ball/ hissed broiling, and the roots pooped/…While he had arrows/ he aimed and shot, and every show brought down/one of his huddling enemies.” (Homer 992, 1042)…

It describes in the text, “That was all, and it brought them round to action. But as I sent on them toward Scylla, I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”( XII.783) He was forced to make this tough decision because by telling them he would have created pandemonium and that would not have been for the best of the crew. Although it would have been easier for him if he had had someone to share the grim news with, he was compelled to keep it to himself because it was his responsibility to think of others before himself. It was apparent to the reader how many responsibilities Odysseus had solely while completing the arduous task of taking care of his crewmates. In taking care of his crewmates he was required to look after them and make sure they did not get themselves in trouble, which, especially in this mythical world in which gods and goddesses rule the fates of mortal men, proved to be challenging.…

Even after Odysseus risks his men’s lives to satiate his own petty lust for glory, he reminds them that it was he who defeated the cyclops. Though Odysseus blinds the cyclops with the help of four other men, he fails to acknowledge them in his speech to his crew, stating that “my courage, my presence of mind and tactics saved us all.” The repetition of the word my represents Odysseus again staking claim to the conquering of Polyphemus.…
