The Odyssey Movie Analysis

The Odyssey written by Homer in 8th century is known to one of the greatest Epic Poem written. This epic poem was turned into a movie in 2000; the movie was called O Brother, Where Art Thou? The movie was directed by Joel Coen and the protagonist was played by George Clooney, one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Joel Coen’s adaption of Homer’s epic poem was showcases Odysseus’s traits of determination of his journey, cunning and god-like personalities are shown in a more visual way through the use of nature imagery, costume/style, and cinematography. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Is the modern adaption which shows a visual representation of Odysseus traits from Homer’s epic poem them Odyssey. In order to display Odysseus trait of being cunning, the director used costume/style to showcase Odysseus personality. For example, in the movie, Ulysses is dressed up as a color guard to save his friend Tommy. Tommy is about to be burnt to stake, Ulysses thinks right away how to save his friend. In the movie we see these features being represented through the use of Cinematography. For example, in the movie Ulysses is concerned about his hair, whenever he is fixing his hair the camera takes a zoom to show his hair, showing he likes being a perfectionist. This is similar to Odysseys in the epic poem because he is described as being this handsome look man like a god. Another example of his features being represented as god-like is whenever Ulysses is speaking the camera angle is always up, meaning showing his the important person. The camera mostly focuses on his face and his personality, the different camera angles emphasizes Ulysses features and personality. His features of being like a god are shown through the use of camera angles/close shots throughout the
