Beowulf, Gilgamesh, The Iliad, and The Odyssey are all epic stories that we study today. These stories all relate and are similar to each other because of the epic heroes and challenges in each one. The characters are all unique and have a different story and challenge to overcome. This element of literature was found in the Elements of Literature in the Holt textbook and on Sparknotes. The characters are the main part of the story and give a purpose to the setting, plot line, and imagery in each. The setting in each story gives each character a place in which something happens. Depending on the setting, the character will have to prevail themselves. In the beginning of Beowulf, Grendel is in Herot and he is going to the Mead hall to attack
