To begin, both The Odyssey and Batman Begins had plots written under the Hero’s journey format. As in many hero stories, the plot begins with the main characters, Odysseus and Bruce Wayne being called to begin a journey. Bruce denied his parents’ death while Odysseus refuses to listen to the goddess Circe. After they overcame their doubts, Bruce and Odysseus begins to train and gather up their knowledge. After learning everything they needed to know they finally were ready to begin the journey. Odysseus followed Circe’s advice of going on the “safer trail” while Bruce leaves the temple in the mountains and heads back home to begin fighting crime. On their journeys, the characters faced many hardships and setbacks. Odysseus and his crew had to endure through the harsh conditions at sea while Bruce had to conquer his fear of bats and fight criminals under the identity of Batman. Later both Odysseus and Bruce learned some striking things. Odysseus learned about every single event that will occur for the remainder of his life, including the fact that all his shipmates will die. Bruce learned the true identity of his old master and that he would have to fight his former teacher to protect Gotham. Both main characters used this information to their advantage and planned out the rest of their Journey. In the Odyssey, foreshadowing was used when Odysseus learned every detail of his life. During this scene, much illustrative, descriptive language was used. In Batman Begins, many flashbacks were used to help the reader understand the events that happened before the story began. From the flashbacks, the viewers got the chance to learn how Bruce got his fear of bats and how his parents died. Lots of imagery was used in both the Odyssey and Batman Begins. Since both stories had many things going on at once, a great of amount of imagery was needed to set up the scene and help the viewers better understand what was happening.
