The Odysseus: A True Hero

There are many different definitions of a hero. Many people have opinionated or moral definitions. Some people say that a hero needs to be physically, mentally, and emotionally strong. Others say that a hero needs to be able to protect the things they love. There are many different variations based on peoples’ perspectives over time. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, claims that a real hero fights for the things they truly love. Homer supports his claim by telling Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca after 20 years. The author’s purpose is to tell Odysseus’ story in his perspective in order to get the true definition of a hero across to his audience. A lot of people say that Odysseus was a great hero and fought his own battles. Other say that he’s a cowardly loser who lets his selfishness get in the way of everyone’s safety. ‘Here, Cyclops, try this wine- to top off the banquet of human flesh you’ve bolted down’(Homer, 17). Odysseus is cold-hearted and feels no remorse about his dead crew when he gives the Cyclops wine. Odysseus is unsympathetic and insensitive with dealing about the deaths of his crew. He shows no anger or regretting gives the cyclops wine to wash down the entrails of his crew. Odysseus is senseless and insane when he tells the Cyclops his name so he could get credit for blinding hi(Homer, 21). ‘Cyclops- if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you- say Odysseus.’ He’s unreasonable and idiotic when telling the Polyphemus his name to get credit and look heroic.
