The Odysseus: A Great Greek Hero

Great Essays
A human who is favored by the gods, shows courage and strength when dealing with tribulation. These attributes are what makes Odysseus such a great hero, but not just Odysseus, but all the heroes of old Greek stories shows these traits too. Heroes of today have many similar traits to old Greek heroes, but they are immensely different. A hero today would be defined as someone who has had many hardships in life and has overcome them, or has carried out courageous acts that have benefited others and not themselves. The Odyssey, by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, is an example of a story that features a great Greek hero. I consider my father a modern hero. If I were to compare the two, they would be similar in many ways, but there would …show more content…
While on his journeys to return to his home, beloved wife, and son, he showed us, the readers, his best traits: his intelligence and cleverness. When he meets the giant Cyclops, named Polyphemus, he is put into a treacherous ordeal and must think his way out of the cave, where the Cyclops trapped him in. With the slight help of the Goddess, Athena, he comes up with a plan to blind the Cyclops. When Polyphemus opens up the cave to ask the other Cyclopes for help after the plan had been carried out he screams out the name, Nobody, the name Odysseus said was his. "Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions" (9.366-367) By Odysseus planning out his plan thoroughly and saying that is his name before they had caused the Cyclopes to fall asleep he had thought for this very moment to come. Odysseus and his crew escape by tying themselves under sheep while they escape the hands of the now blind giant as he feels his sheep and lets them go. Odysseus in this scenario shows his intelligence and cleverness as he was able to escape from the Cyclops grasp in an unexpected …show more content…
When Odysseus arrives home he must be patient and create a plan before killing his wife’s suitors who have been rude and disrespectful to his family and home. He must resist the urge to tell his wife, Penelope, he has arrived home, and his want to kill the suitors. “[…] and out of the palace issued those women who in the past had been going to bed with the suitors, full of cheerful spirits and greeting each other with laughter. But the spirit deep in the heart of Odysseus was stirred by this, and much he pondered in the division of mind and spirit, whether to spring on them and kill each one, or rather to let them lie this one more time with the insolent suitors, for the last and latest time; but the heart was growling within him.” (20.6-13) With this citation of Odysseus feelings, he shows his distaste for the men who have rudely entered his home and the servants who have turned their backs to him. The feelings stated in these line show he is angered but must be patient with them so he can execute his well thought out plan to dispose of the ones who have betrayed and angered

Odysseus has protected his family and the people who stand with him in the ways he knows best, so I believe that in the Odyssey by Homer that the main character Odysseus is a hero even though he had lost his men to the gods and monsters he came in contact with and had lied to his family he had to protect the people he loved from others that want to hurt him thought his loved ones. Odysseus is a hero in my view from the way that he tricks the Cyclops in to believing that his name is Nohbdy instead if Odysseus so when he and his men escape the Cyclops cannot tell who had been there. The reason Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy was that he knew that if someone would have asked the cyclops who had tricked him and they could be one that would not know that he was alive and might be one of his enemy’s. When he was planning a way to escape eight of his men were eaten by the cyclops from the long wait from the making of the plain but it was one of the sacrifices he had to make for a better out come from them…

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not an example of an effective leader as he does not make the best decisions and does not communicate well with his companions. One of the many characteristics of a good leader is the ability to make good decisions and Odysseus does not perform this ability well. When Odysseus and his crew arrive at the Cyclops Island, his men decide to steal some food and run back to the ship but Odysseus, however, demands to see the cyclops Polyphemus, who lives on the island. “Ah, how sound that was!…

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is a character whose traits affect the plotline rather substantially, including the clever ways he uses his hospitality, as well as the negative impacts of his arrogance. Odysseus’ sense of hospitality helped him out of a bad situation when he, extended his “friendship” to the Cyclops and offered him wine when they found themselves trapped inside Polyphemus’s cave. He uses this to manipulate Polyphemus into a false sense of security, the Cyclops going so far as to tell Odysseus that he will make him a “gift that will please (Homer 306),” implying that Polyphemus believes Odysseus is being honest and sincere. Because Odysseus planned ahead, he then tells the giant that his name is, instead, “Nohbdy,” which will later…

Odysseus is impulsive and does not think before he acts. He is very selfish and only wants to see what glory the Cyclops gives him. He expects everyone to bow down to him, let alone know who he is, contrasting Odysseus when he fights the suitors at the end of the story and receives glory from his city. Similarly to the Cyclops’ terrifying appearance and actions, after Odysseus slaughters the suitors, the old Nurse literally describes Odysseus as “terrifying” (22: 422). Now, all these similarities make Odysseus and Polyphemos sound almost identical to each other but, Odysseus is even more of a monster than Polyphemos. A common theme in The Odyssey, is nostos, “returning home,” and oikos, “home.” The majority of the epic poem is driven by Odysseus’ lack of understanding that he needs to just go home. While traveling around and destroying the homes of others, Odysseus almost loses his own.…
