Objectification Of Women: Film Analysis

Superior Essays
The objectification of women has affected both women as a whole and minorities, specifically black women. Women are misrepresented and exploited in addition to having to deal with having their sexualities challenged daily. It is an unfair trial to have to persevere through as it is a challenge they did not choose. Bringing attention to the issue of female objectification is relevant because it is still something women suffer from today and one can argue that it is a growing issue in society. It combines both disputed and human rights. Both women as a whole and black women constantly have their sexuality challenged and objectified. Women as a whole and black women both are treated differently in almost every aspect of society and thus a human …show more content…
There have been a few mainstream films whose protagonist is a transgender man but have starred cisgender females. The depiction of transgender men is important but the issue has arisen concerning whether or not it is appropriate for the films to star cisgender women. Some argue that is is a positive since it prevents transgender men from going through the trauma of having to return to pretending to identify as a gender they are not. One effective compromise includes using either a body double or a twin. This method is used in the show Orange is the New Black (2013). Laverne Cox is a transgender actress and her character has flashbacks pertaining to her as a male in which her twin brother portrays. One can conclude that the real issue is whether or not Hollywood has given transgender actors the chance to portray both genders or if cisgender actors are being cast …show more content…
A current, pressing issue is fight to be unassociated with drag queens. Reality television absolutely loves shows about drag queens. A popular reality show starring drag queens is RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009). Since it included men dressing as women, viewers began interchangeably using the terms drag queen and transgender woman. This ignorance angered the transgender community as the two are completely different. RuPaul would also use derogatory language such as “shemale” and “tranny” which offended the transgender community as well. The show being so mainstream caused a bigger rift between drag queens and transgender women. Drag queens are revered while a common transgender women needs to be glamorized to be “good enough” by the industry’s

Orange is the New Black is an example of cultural hegemony and the social injustices women and minorities face within the judicial system. It also portrays how the different social statuses of inmates dictates the treatment during incarceration. One inmate in particular that we see struggle is Sophia Burset. Unlike the other ladies, Sophia struggles on a level most do not in this particular setting; she is an African American transgender. I feel like Sophia’s character is a breath of fresh air within the entertainment business.…

In early Islamic culture, a transgender woman called a mukhannathun, a woman who had been born a male but with natural femininity, was accepted and allowed to have relations with men or women. The mukhannathum held an important position in society, associated with music and entertainment, and are stated in the Qur’an as companions of women. They were companions of Prophet Muhammad and his wives, and close enough to accompany them in their homes. However, this is significant as a woman’s chamber is known to be a holy place for Muslims, and is forbidden to strangers and most unrelated men.…

In her speech “Our Armies Are Rising and We Are Getting Stronger”, to the Latino Gay Men of New York (LGMNY) in 2001, Sylvia Rivera recounted her life in the context of her contribution to transgender activism, specifically that of the Stonewall Riots which took place during the summer of 1969. Throughout her speech Rivera reveals the underlying and persistent marginalization that took place not only on behalf of the cisgender, heteronormative community, but by her own community as well. Just eight months before her death, Rivera’s speech encapsulated a hierarchy of oppression that attacked her from all sides, which is not only reflected through her personal narratives, but also through the memorialization of social movements and the people…

Caitlyn Jenner herself was quoted saying that “the hardest part about being a woman is figuring out what to wear.” Many consider it stunning progress that we have successfully integrated transgender women into the pages of our largest magazines and onto our television screens. However, an identity for transgender women was never established outside of the traditional female archetypes that support the perpetuation of Capitalism. Dozens of transgender women, especially transgender women of color, have been murdered in the past year.…

On the night of October 19th, I attended an event co sponsored by the Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies department and the Franklin Humanities institute at Duke. Doctor Nicholas L. Clarkson joined us to inspire a discussion about the intersection between biopolitics, identity, citizenship and nationalism. To begin, Dr. Clarkson discussed the 2003 Department of Homeland Security memo signaling security personnel to be alert for terrorist who concealed weapons under women’s clothing. The publishing of this memo would foreshadow the eventual linkage of transgendered people with terror/terrorism. A central theme to Clarkson's talk was the misrepresentation and visibility factors of transgendered people in contemporary society.…

The hype on Caitlyn Jenner’s transition has dimmed since her interview with Diane Sawyer and her Vanity Fair cover, but on September 25th it is legally documented that she is Caitlyn and a woman. Caitlyn is placed on a pedestal by her popularity on the Kardashians and her being an Olympic winner, and it seems unfair to the Trans community because of how Caitlyn Jenner knows so little. Her status also has helped her move through this process, not smoothly, but not as bumpy as most in the Trans or gender minority community. Laverne Cox another celebrity, who has become another face of the Trans community, lived in Alabama and she didn’t have the support of family like Jenner. She was bullied in school for being different and so pressured into being ‘normal’ that she tried to commit suicide (Breen 2014).…

When reading “Seeing Eye to Body: The literal Objectification of Women” by Nathan A. Heflick, and Jamie L. Goldenberg. They were saying women and men being objectified. Women are being objectified more than men are but, women are being objectified daily while looking for a job while meeting people and many more instances. Women are being seen as objects and as tools to either attract customers or as advertisement. Men see the more revealing a woman is dressed the less educated she is.…

Women especially have been found to be emotionally affected by objectification. Psychologists have reported that objectification causes the emotion of shame and anxiety. Humans want to be seen as more than just a tool for offspring, to some extent this may be because we want to be viewed as more evolved than other species. Women especially feel pressured to look good. Because of the males objectifying and the high standards set by the media women are constantly judging their own appearance.…

Diversity in America has been rising every year. Lately the country’s diverseness has skyrocketed since the legalization of gay marriage. The media is meant to represent the diversity of the country and represent the common people and the number of gay and colored people has shot up immensely within the last 20 years but the media has failed to keep up with this. Most people, white, straight and usually male, feel that the media represents them perfectly and it does. But for the people that are colored, transgender, gay or sometimes female feel that the media does not have enough representation for them and they feel as though the country does not acknowledge the fact that they exist.…

The Civil Rights Movement and the Stonewall Riots occurred simultaneously and for black, trans and queer women I would assume they felt pressure to decide what movement catered to their identity the most. With the Stonewall Riots fueling the LGBT Rights movement, it also was whitewashed and disregarded the intersectionality of those queer and trans of color. BlackLivesMatter validates, embraces, and advocates on behalf of all black-identifying womxn, but I wonder if black activists (women and men) of the Civil Rights Movement intentionally refrained from supporting black, trans women in cases of sexual assault. Anti-blackness and homophobia, both factors of white supremacy, All in all, the exclusion of their narratives alongside the racist, unjust judicial system (police and courts) withheld the dominance and division that white supremacy inflicts on the Black…

However, the addition of more identifiable terms to the language can also be problematic. Female-to-male transsexual porn star Buck Angel has been criticized for his transformation within the porn industry. Because his gender identity represents a transgender man, individuals often assume his “male” appearance defines how he would like to be perceived. Since Angel does not identify as a man, these heteronormative assumptions designate his identity of a transgender man as inferior and dismissive within the social structure.…
