Obesity is now a problem that is causing more pain than pleasure in today 's society. In the 19th century obesity was considered a symbol of wealth and power, but as the years went on scientists discovered that obesity can lead to the demise of the human body. We as a country should do better at finding ways to prevent this horrible epidemic from spreading any further. In America alone, more than 190 billion dollars in medical costs have been spent taking care of the problems of the obesity epidemic that could have been prevented. These problems that have not only been effecting and hurting adults, but children as well in physical, emotional and mental ways. Though the rates of overweight Americans gradually continue to climb maintaining a healthy diet along with staying physically fit can drastically reduce the rate of the obesity problems that we have today. To understand how to find ways to reduce this epidemic, we must first understand what it is. What is Obesity? Dictionary.com describes obesity as a condition of being overweight, but when do you know that you are over weight, how is that measured, and what causes it? The Body Mass Index, BMI, is the system used by doctors to determine whether the patient is healthy or overweight. The BMI is a person 's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters.
