The Grandmother Character Analysis

From the beginning the O’Conner uses characterization to present good and evil with the Grandmother with the way she uses her religion. When the family meets Red Sammy Butts the grandmother is sitting having a conversation about the old times compared to the new times and the grandmother says "It isn 't a soul in this green world of God 's that you can trust" (409). This is hypocritical of her faith. Leading us to believe that she doesn’t trust you unless you show her different. Then later on in the story she begs for her life, never once begging for her grandchildren or even her own son’s life to be saved. In multiple parts of the story she pleads “You wouldn’t shoot a lady, would you” (413-17). With the Grandmother just pleading for her own …show more content…
With the grandmother it took her all the way to find compassion for people that had an evil spirit. Her last words being “she saw the man’s face twisted close to her own as if he were going to cry and she murmured, “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children” (417). It took her to the moment when she was about to lose her life to finally understand that everyone is worth of receiving compassion and grace from God no matter what evils they had done. Also in that moment she finally sees the Misfit for more than just this evil man that out killing people but as one of Gods beautiful children. Then on the other hand the Misfit sees something completely different when it came to the Grandmother. In the final lines of the story the Misfit says to one of the guys "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (418). The Misfit saw through the Grandmothers all good and no bad façade. But in those moments he saw that she was only good when it benefited her and that some of her actions in her live leading up to that moment may not have been always good. His last words even to lead us to believe that killing the grandmother may even have affected him. Although they present good and evil in different ways for themselves we saw a change in them both by the end of the

O’Connor uses the passage above to show that in this story, grace is obtained from acts of evil and the use of violence is used to promote spiritual epiphany. In this case, the Grandmother’s true colors are seen in the minutes right before the Misfit utters those infamous words. Unable to believe that the Misfit might actually be as dishonorable as he seems to be, she speaks to The Misfit about the salvation of Jesus and seeing “good” in a murderer during the final moments of her life. Ironically, the Grandmother calls upon her Christian faith, something she has merely flaunted rather than lived, to save…

in this scene it is evident that the Grandmother is selfish and although they have already did away with her family she feels she's was worthy to live merely because she was a lady (Bedford/St. Martins 151). The Grandmother repetitiously tells the Misfit to pray, implying that he can be saved or redeemed of his sins and that the Lord will have mercy on him if he spares her life, in contrary she couldn't even formulate the conscience to pray and she…

O’Connor brings her readers the subject of good and evil and the loss of hope for society. We see the Grandmother being arrogant and who claims to be a good christian woman, but at the same time we see the Misfit who is more thoughtful and consciences as he is the one to provide the Grandmother of God’s grace. O’Connor gives the idea that the Misfit knows more about religion than the Grandmother does despite of him being a killer. Towards the end when the Grandmother and the Misfit discuss about whether or not Jesus brings Lazarus back to life, she says maybe he didn't bring him back to life. This proves that Grandmother in fact did not have much faith as she claimed to have.…

This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. The grandmother acts like a “good” person on the road by “...would not let the children throw the box and the peanut butter napkins out the window” (O’Connor 140).…

The Grandmother is thought to be the hero by O’Connor herself, who said in a 1963 interview "the heroine of the story, the Grandmother, is in the most significant position life offers the Christian. She is facing death. And to all appearances she, like the rest of us, is not too well prepared for it.…
