The dance concert I chose to see for my critique was The Nutcracker. Ballet Arizona was the company that put on this show. I saw this production on Tuesday, December 10, 2015 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix, Arizona. Since The Nutcracker is a holiday classic, I have always wanted to see how a young girl's toy nutcracker came to life. I have read before about it but have never seen it for myself.
The first piece was the “Party Scene”. It had a very beautiful set including a huge elegant fireplace on the right with a couch and staircase right next to it. Mother Ginger was this big tall woman that had dancers dance under her. These dancers are also known as bon-bons. The lighting was the same as the russian dance, the sky backdrop. They used Mother Ginger as their prop by having her as the way they get around. Ballet is the type of dance they are dancing in this scene. The dancers used mostly downstage while Mother Ginger was upstage. There wasn’t more than 10 bon-bons but they all danced together for the most part. They kept this dance very professional while still having fun with it. I liked this piece but I felt since they were dancing all together, they were constantly do the same moves so it felt like a really long dance.
My second favorite dance was the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”. This dance was very mesmerizing to watch. It is ballet with the fairy that is dressed in a white dress and short tutu that sticks out but is full of gems. She used the space on stage stage very well and keeps her lines clean. This is a very elegant dance but still goes with the rhythm of the music. I felt that she repeated moves as well but kept it …show more content…
This ballet piece was simple yet elegant. The main fairy wore a tan dress with a short tutu along with a crown on her head. There were no more than 10 of the other dancers that danced around her which looked cool with her in the middle. They seemed to mostly stay in the center of the stage and not really move around. The lighting is till the sky background and there are no props needed for this dance. They tried to keep their moves to a minimum while keeping it professional too. I liked how they broadcasted the main fairy but didn’t over shadow her with dancers around
