In the article, from American Journal of Public Health, it talks about celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS). According to the Nurses’ Health study, “the Nurses’ Health Study is among one of the largest investigations into the risk factors of major chronic diseases in women.” The Nurses’ Health Study plays a huge role on Public Health.
NHS started off as a team of investigators from Harvard University that were interested in studying Women’s Health and chronic disease. The team of investigators followed the guidelines used by the British Doctor’s Study on how to acquire and accumulate their information. The NHS is studying nurses from Canada and even expanding their studies to male nurses. When the team of investigators started off with only plaining to perform their studies on the wives of doctors. The NHS is no longer accumulating statistics from the United States, the NHS is combining many races and ethnics which helps expand their knowledge around the world. The NHS also set up guidelines for US Dietary guidelines, guidelines for physical activities and nutrition and many more other guidelines that are helping the United …show more content…
Nurses’ Health Society contributes to the Public Health World because NHS is receiving the information from an average of 120,00 nurses who are involved in the cycles of study. It is an average of 94% nurses who hardly miss a cycle which helps insure the study is accurate and up to date. According to Morabia (2016), “NHS is built on two strong methodological foundations: high quality exposures and almost exhaustive ascertainments of outcomes.” (Morabia, 2016, para. 6) Additional research that I believe would help the NHS is obesity in men and how it differs from women. I understand that obesity is more common in men. 74% of American men are obese compared to women who only 36% of American women are obese. My question is why are more men likely to be obese than women. Is it a job related dilemma or is it stress related? How come men have the higher percentage rate if men burn calories and fat quicker than
